Electronic body protector price: what budget for your club?

What an electronic taekwondo body protector costs, what a club really needs, and how to size your order. Worked examples for 2, 4 and 6 protectors.

The electronic body protector price depends first on what you want to do with it. A full competition scoring setup is a large investment, typically several thousand euros per court. A training protector costs far less: FU FIGHT is priced at 350 EUR per protector, and a club needs at least two to spar. Here is how to work out a realistic budget.

What you pay for in a competition setup

A competition system is more than two protectors. To run one court you need the whole chain:

  • electronic body protectors, usually in several sizes
  • transmitters for each protector
  • a receiver at the table
  • scoring software and a computer to run it
  • sensor socks for every fighter
  • often electronic head guards and judge handsets too

Each item adds to the bill, and so does keeping spares. That is why a complete setup, per court, typically comes to several thousand euros. It is the right purchase for a club or association that hosts official events with a recognised system. For weekly training in a small or medium club, it is often more than the budget allows.

What you pay for with a training protector

With a training protector the logic is simpler. You buy the protectors, and the score is displayed through a companion app.

FU FIGHT costs 350 EUR per protector. Pre-orders are opening. Before you order, ask the supplier what is included in that price and what, if anything, comes on top, such as delivery to your country.

Why you must think in pairs

One protector alone is useful for pad-style work with a partner who wears it. But to spar under scoring conditions, both fighters need one. So the minimum order is two, and every extra pair adds one more scoring bout running at the same time.

Think of it like this: the number of pairs you own is the number of bouts you can score at once.

How to size your purchase

Start from your training groups, not from your wish list. Count how many fighters need scored sparring in the same session, and how long you are willing to let them wait.

OrderCost at 350 EUR eachScored bouts at onceTypical use
2 protectors700 EUR1Small competition group, rotation work
4 protectors1,400 EUR2Squad of 8 to 12, two mats running
6 protectors2,100 EUR3Large squad, or juniors and seniors together

Worked example

Take a club with ten competitors training together twice a week.

  • With 2 protectors, one pair fights while eight wait or do other drills. That works if you run stations: one scored bout, one pad station, one footwork station, and rotate every two minutes.
  • With 4 protectors, four fighters are scored at once. With three stations, almost nobody stands still.
  • With 6 protectors, six of the ten are scored at any moment. This suits long sparring sessions before a competition.

Many clubs start with two, learn how to use them in their sessions, then add a pair the following season. One point to check before you size the order: ask how the protectors fit different body sizes, because a squad with small juniors and heavy seniors may not be able to share the same ones.

Costs people forget

Whatever system you look at, put these questions in your budget sheet:

  • Delivery and taxes for your country.
  • A device to show the score, if the club does not already have one.
  • Storage and transport, so the protectors last.
  • Time. Someone has to learn the system and show the other coaches.

What to ask a supplier before buying

  1. What exactly is included in the price per protector?
  2. Which sizes exist, and how do they fit children and adults?
  3. What does the app show to the coach and to the athlete?
  4. How is the protector powered, and how long does it last in a session?
  5. What are the warranty and after-sales terms?
  6. When will my order be delivered?
  7. Is the system recognised for official competition? For FU FIGHT the answer is clear: it is a training system. Official events use systems recognised by World Taekwondo, such as Daedo and KPNP.

We do not answer questions 2 to 6 in this article on purpose. Get those answers in writing from the supplier, for any brand you consider.

FAQ

Is 350 EUR the price for a pair or for one protector?

It is the price for one FU FIGHT protector. Two protectors, the minimum for sparring, come to 700 EUR.

Should a small club buy a competition system instead?

Only if you plan to host official competitions, which require a system recognised by World Taekwondo. For training, a competition setup represents a much larger budget than training protectors.

Can we spread the cost?

Yes, by buying in stages: two protectors this season and two more next season. Grants, sponsors and club fundraising can also cover part of the cost.
